MMA Memo #267

Photonic Techniques for Use on the Atacama Large Millimeter Array

J. Payne, B. Shillue, A. Vaccari
National Radio Astronomy Observatory - Tucson
June 8, 1999

Keywords: photonic local oscillator, optical fiber, antenna, heterodyne receivers

This memo presents some new results of the photonic local oscillator project. It is a copy of an invited paper that will be presented at MWP 99 (Microwave Photonics 99).

Of particular interest is the first result of a real time correction system that maintains the optical path length of the distribution fiber to each antenna constant to a fraction of a micron. This system may have application in overcoming changes in propagation time due to temperature or mechanical effects within the fiber for either the distribution of a microwave reference or a photonic LO. A more detailed memo dealing with other aspects of the project will be issued in the next few months.
